Kissimmee, Florida- After losing to Indiana Wesleyan 2-0 in the semifinals on Thursday, the Covenant College men's soccer team was paired against Mid-America Christian this past Saturday for the consolatory third place game. "We wanted to give some of our younger guys a chance to play in this one, and we also wanted to send the seniors out on a high note," said Coach Nathan Pifer. "Everyone worked hard this year and we wanted to take this game not only as a chance to play for the third place trophy, but also as a chance to prepare for getting back here and winning it next year."
Early on, the Scots looked set to prove that they were gunning for third, as junior defender Hunt Davidson scored his first career goal off an acrobatic volley. Julian Allgeier earned the assist, as it was his low cross which found Davidson waiting at the far post to slam it home. Mid-America would respond towards the end of the second half, though, getting down the left side and finishing past Covenant goalkeeper Matt Higgins to level matters at 1-1. Midway through the second half, Mid-America struck again, scoring an incredible goal from thirty yards out. It was a scoreline that would remain at 2-1 in MAC's favor until the final ten minutes, when, like he had done just two games before, Covenant forward Julian decided to take the game into his own hands. Scoring two goals in the dying moments of the game, Allgeier helped ensure that Covenant would claim the third place trophy, and also secured his place on the all-tournament team alongside fellow teammate David Nielson. With the victory, the Scots ended their season with a 13-6-2 record, and will now look forward to the 2010 season.
