Scots Suffer Tough Loss in Regular Season Finale

Lookout Mountain, GA-  Saturday was the final regular season game and senior day for the Covenant College men's soccer team, which, for the eight seniors on the squad, meant they would be playing their last game in Covenant colors on Scotland Yard.  Indeed, Ben Wagner, Scott Schindler, William Wolfe, Ryan Yackel, David Nielson, Brent Ripple, Ford Quarterman, and Derek Wieldraayer were all recognized, and, with the exception of the injured Quarterman, were all ready to play their part in defeating visitors Berry College.  The Scots' seniors had never beaten Berry, falling to them in each of the three previous seasons' matches, and early on, it appeared as if the tide would finally be turned.  Fittingly, it was senior right-back Ben Wagner who nearly got Covenant on the board, heading a Brent Ripple corner kick off the inside of the right post.  Covenant players were unable to collect the bouncing ball and Berry escaped with the score still tied at 0-0.  For the remainder of the half Covenant continued to run the game, doubling Berry's shot and corner counts 10-5 and 6-3 respectively.  The second half, though, saw Berry come out in a more rejuvenated spirit, and they were able to capitalize on a 72nd minute Reid Popple corner, as Mark Bloom headed in from 8 yards out.  Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Scots continued to press, with Julian Allgeier hitting the crossbar for the second time in the game off a long throw-in from Colby Robbins.  At the end of the day, though, despite playing a hard-fought match, the Scots were forced to settle with a 1-0 loss.  "We've got to find a way to win these close games," said head coach Nathan Pifer, "with playoffs coming up we have to realize that we're going to be in tight games like this where we're going to have to fight for a result.  Hopefully in the future we'll come out on top."  The Scots will now face a near two-week hiatus as they await word on where the NCCAA regional tournament will be held.  Covenant ended the regular season with a 9-5-2 record, having also had to cancel three games on the year due to weather.
