Covenant Loses to Bryan in 1-0 Upset

Dayton, TN- Last year, Covenant's regular season matchup against rivals Bryan College ended in a 2-0 home defeat for the Scots.  The year before that saw the Scots travel to Bryan and lose 2-1 in a game with all the emotion and hype of a championship match.  So, when Covenant made the trip to Bryan last Wednesday, they were greeted with a familiar reception.  Large amounts of Bryan fans, as well as a giant TV screen, lined the sidelines as the team arrived, and when the game kicked off, both the home and away crowds made their voices heard.  Indeed, Covenant hoped that the game would turn out more like their past two post-season contests against Bryan- which have both ended in Covenant victories -rather than their past two regular season losses.  It was Bryan, though, who looked most likely to score from the start, coming out strong in the opening moments and controlling the play.  Covenant was able to weather the storm, though, and by the end of the first half looked the more likely side to score.  Julian Allgeier had a goal called back after he was judged to be offsides, and Colby Robbins was stuffed by the Bryan keeper from close range.

The second half also seemed to be going the Scots way until an unfortunate goal saw them fall behind 1-0.  Goalkeeper John Eger was beat in the box and Scott Schindler could only watch in frustration as the ball rolled over his outstretched leg and into the net.  The Scots continued pushing as David Pifer hit a shot over the bar from long range, and Scott Schindler saw his headed effort cleared off the line.  After several more close chances for Covenant, the game ended in a 1-0 Bryan victory.  To add further misery to an unfortunate evening for the Scots, senior Ben Wagner was knocked unconscious in the final seconds as he challenged for a header in the air.  He will most likely miss the next two weeks, including this Saturday's homecoming match against King College.  With the loss, the Scots are now 4-4-1 on the season.
