Clearwater, FL- The Lady Scots' volleyball team travelled south to the Gulf of Mexico this weekend to compete in a four-team round-robin tournament. Opposing teams included 19-2 Clearwater Christian College who was ranked #1 in the NCCAA for Division II, 11-2 Pensacola Christian College, and 10-5 St. Petersburg Junior College. Covenant began their weekend extremely slow, losing to Clearwater in three quick sets 14-25, 20-25, and 15-25, and nothing seemed to change entering Friday's second match against Pensacola Christian as the Lady Scots dropped two close opening sets (23-25 and 25-27). The third set on, however, showed a drastic turnaround in play, and the Lady Scots roared back to pull off an outstanding come-from-behind victory. With the win, Covenant snapped a 9 match losing streak and is no longer winless in 5-setters this season.
Saturday's first match was a rematch of the night before and gave Covenant an excellent opportunity to exact revenge on the Clearwater team who had beaten them handily less than 24 hours prior. This time, a slow start was not characteristic of the Lady Scots. Heavy hitting from Erica Adams, Johanna Stoep, and Jessie Jakes helped Covenant earn one more five set victory (scores were 26-24, 12-25, 28-26, 18-25, 15-8). In the final match of the weekend, Covenant played strong through-out and forced yet another five set match, but the ladies' efforts seemed somewhat depleted, and St. Petersburg was able to capitalize, edging the Lady Scots 15-13 in the decisive fifth set. The loss, however, does not effect the ladies' overall record or statistics since St. Petersburg is a junior college.
Covenant will play Warner University in Lake Wales, FL Tuesday night during their return trip and will then be home for their following 3 matches.
