Lookout Mountain, GA - Senior guard Liz Martin buried seven 3-point field goals and finished with a game-high 28 points but the Covenant College women's basketball team fell to Milligan College in a hard-fought Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up 60-54 on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Heather Mandela pulled down 20 rebounds for Milligan (6-4, 3-1), none bigger than one on a missed free throw with 25.2 seconds left in the game. Teammate Rikki Baughman made the front end of a bonus free throw situation to break a tie, and put Milligan up 55-54. On the second free throw, Covenant failed to box out Mandela, and she made them pay, getting the rebound and getting fouled. She nailed a free throw to put the Lady Buffs up by two.
Covenant failed to score in its final two possessions, extending their scoreless futility to the game's final 3:06. Leah Anderson and Brittany White made free throws for Milligan for the final winning margin. Baughman led Milligan with 15 points and Mandela finished with 13 points, picking up a double-double.
Freshman Ashley Wilson finished with 10 points and four assists for Covenant, who plays three road non-conference games next week, starting with a Tuesday night game at Reinhardt at 7:00.
