James Cain was named the Assistant Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field in May of 2026. He is currently in his first year at Covenant.

Prior to his time at Covenant, Cain spent the 2025-26 academic year as a graduate assistant coach for cross country and track & field at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. Before becoming a graduate assistant at LeTourneau, Cain was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Alabama-Huntsville, in 2024-25, where he helped men's track earn Gulf South Conference championships in indoor and outdoor track and men's cross country earn an NCAA National Championships appearance.

During his playing career for the Chargers of UAH, Cain competed in both cross country and track, compiling two top-10 finishes in distance events in track, while running personal best times of 25:41.0 in the 8k and 22:50.7 in the 4-Mile for cross country. He was a member of five Gulf South Conference championship teams.
