CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's tennis team used two victories from Chris Cox and Ben Tonkel to fend off USA South foe Maryville, 6-3, on Wednesday night at Baylor School in Chattanooga.
The matches were moved to the indoor courts at Baylor due to inclement weather.
Covenant (10-9, 5-1 USA South) has won three straight conference matches and keeps pace in the race for the West Division title. Maryville dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-8 in the USA South.
Cox and Tonkel notched a point in doubles play as they teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Charles Russell and Mateus Coling. Connor Shimmel and Trey Wood gave Covenant a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion with their 8-5 win over Wes Bloeme and Trevor Perry at the third spot.
In singles, Cox knocked off Daniel Silva at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2 while Tonkel took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Perry at the No. 5 spot. Micah Fox took down Russell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Trey Wetjen was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Cole Stinson at No. 6.
The win for Covenant capped a season sweep of Maryville.

Covenant will travel to Montgomery, Ala., on Friday to take on USA South member Huntingdon. Match time is 2 p.m. CDT( 3 p.m. EDT).
