BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The regionally-ranked Covenant women's tennis team fell to Birmingham Southern on the road on Saturday by an 8-1 score in non-conference action at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
The loss was the first of the year for the Lady Scots (2-1). Birmingham Southern, ranked No. 10 in the ITA Atlantic South region poll, moves to 2-1 on the year.
Gracie Smith picked up the lone win for Covenant on the day. Smith defeated Virginia Hammond 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Annie DeLuca went to three sets at No. 2 singles against Isabella Wisener before falling 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Aly Hall dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Carlee Petro, ranked No. 11 regionally.
Birmingham Southern took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. DeLuca and Jennie Spielman nearly took a victory at the No. 3 spot before falling 9-7 to Mary Evelyn Carroll and Lexie Dillard.

Covenant will be off until Feb. 24 when it takes on Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Matches start at 3 p.m. EST (2 p.m. CST).
