ATLANTA, Ga. -- Six Covenant women's tennis players competed in the USTA/ITA South Regional tournament over the weekend in Atlanta. All six players picked up at least one victory during the weekend.
In singles competition, Gracie Smith advanced to the quarterfinal round of the "B" draw bracket with victories over Anastasia Bennett of Agnes Scott 6-3, 7-5, and Elizabeth Knott of LaGrange 6-1, 6-2. Smith fell in the round of eight to Sewanee's Taylor Sprouse 6-0, 6-2. Also in the "B" draw, Claire Luger took a first round victory over Berry's Sage Havrilla 6-4, 6-2.
Covenant also had success in the doubles portion of the tournament. Annie DeLuca and Jennie Spielman went 3-1 in the "C" draw bracket to advance to the championship match of the draw before falling 8-4 to Centre's Courtney DeLong and Zena Maddux. DeLuca and Spielman took an 8-0 win over a doubles team from Oglethorpe before besting tandems from Birmingham Southern and Agnes Scott to get to the championship.
Aly Hall and Esther Eddy took an 8-5 win over Methodist's Han Le and Davi Barbour in the "A" bracket and would then take an 8-6 win over Berry's Mary Cerny and Lauren Byrket in a consolation bracket.
