ROME, Ga. -- Down 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match, the Covenant women's tennis team rallied to defeat No. 13 regionally ranked Berry 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the Richards Tennis Complex in Rome.

The victory over Berry is the first since the Covenant program started in 2007 and moves the Lady Scots to 7-3 overall on the year. The Lady Scots have won three straight matches. Berry drops to 5-2.

The match came down to the top singles spot as Covenant's Aly Hall battled with Berry's Mary Cerny. After dropping the first set, Hall responded by taking the final two for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory giving Covenant the match. Hall has won six straight singles matches and is 7-1 on the year.

Covenant dropped the top two doubles flights in the match, but the tandem of Jennie Spielman and Lindsay Geving kept the Lady Scots in it with their 8-4 victory over Berry's Valerie DeWandel and Emmie Cornell at No. 3.

In singles play, it was the bottom of the lineup that kept the rally going for Covenant. Gracie Smith was a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 winner at the No. 4 spot over Kelsey McCray, while Danielle Morin took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cornell at No. 5. Geving came up big again with a 6-1, 6-4 win over DeWandel at No. 6 as Covenant tied the match at 4-4.

UP NEXT

Covenant will host USA South foe Averett and non-conference opponent Centre on Saturday on Lookout Mountain. The Averett match is set for 10 a.m. and the Centre match will start at 3 p.m.
