KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Gracie Smith broke the Covenant women's tennis program record for career singles victories and the Lady Scots cruised to a pair of victories on Saturday. Covenant defeated Maryville 9-0 in USA South play before shutting out Johnson 9-0 in non-conference play.
Covenant moves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the USA South with the victories.
Smith picked up career singles victory No. 29 to break the program record with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Maryville's Katie Stephens at the No. 4 spot. Smith, a junior, also holds the program's single-season singles wins record that she set as a freshman in 2014.
Also in the Maryville match, Aly Hall and Annie DeLuca combined for an 8-0 win at No. 1 while Claire Luger and Smith also picked up an 8-0 win at No. 2. Lindsay Geving and Jennie Spielman finished off a doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at the third position.
Hall also earned a shutout win in singles play at No. 1, while DeLuca and Luger also took victories. Danielle Morin picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Geving completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
In the Johnson match, Smith and Luger got their second doubles win of the day 8-2 playing at No. 1. Mackenzie Jones and Spielman also won 8-2 at No. 3 and Jessica Rowe and Geving took an 8-0 win at No. 2.
In singles play, DeLuca cruised to a win at the No. 1 spot, while Morin won a close match at No. 2 6-2, 7-5. Spielman won at No. 3 and Masha Lanska took a 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Rowe and Jones both earned shutout wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
