Record-Setting Season Ends in USA South Semis for Women's Tennis

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- A record-setting 2014 season came to an end for the Covenant women's tennis team on Saturday morning in the semifinal round of the USA South Tournament. The Lady Scots fell to second-seed Meredith 6-3.

Covenant's season ends with a 16-8 overall record, which sets a new program mark. The 16 wins bests the previous record of 12 set in 2009.

Meredith advances to the championship match against Methodist set for Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Scots grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play ended. No. 3 doubles team of Molly Peele and Sarah Carter rallied to take a 9-7 victory for Covenant's first point. At No. 1 doubles, Gretchen Rowe and Claire Luger saw a 7-4 lead disappear into an 8-7 deficit, but the duo responded to tie the score at 8-8 and then took the tiebreak 7-5 to give the Lady Scots a 2-1 match lead.

In singles play, Meredith rallied with victories at the Nos. 1 and 1 positions, respectively, to give the Avenging Angels a 3-2 match lead. Ellen Kirkpatrick tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position. But Meredith answered with victories at the final three singles positions.
