Women's Tennis Edges Piedmont 5-4

DEMOREST, Ga. -- The Covenant women's tennis team collected another crucial USA South victory with a 5-4 win at Piedmont on Tuesday afternoon at the Burgen Tennis Courts in Demorest.

The victory puts the Lady Scots at 12-6 overall and 7-2 inside the USA South. Covenant sits in a tie for third place with Huntingdon, but the Lady Scots hold the tiebreaker over the Hawks by virtue of their 5-4 win last week. The 12 wins ties a program record set in 2009. Piedmont drops to 9-6 overall and 6-3 in league play.

Freshmen Gracie Smith and Claire Luger each earned wins in both singles and doubles play. Smith won in three sets at No. 5 singles over Piedmont's Ashley Fannon 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 and teamed up with Lindsay Geving for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Luger took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nicole Parrish at No. 3 singles and paired up with Gretchen Rowe at No. 2 doubles for an 8-4 victory.

Ellen Kirkpatrick took a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over the Lions' Laura Goodwin for Covenant's fifth point.

The Lady Scots continue USA South play on Thursday at Maryville with matches starting at 3:30 p.m. Covenant returns home on Friday and Saturday with matches against Averett and Mary Baldwin.
