CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Freshman Frank Portlock won two singles and doubles matches over the weekend, but the Covenant men's tennis team dropped a pair of USA South contests by 5-4 scores to Greensboro and Ferrum.

The Scots are still seeking their first win of the season as they drop to 0-7 and 0-2 in the conference.

Portlock played at the No. 2 singles spot and earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Greensboro's Matthew Troy on Friday, then a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Ferrum's Taylor Napier on Saturday. In doubles play, Portlock and teammate Roy Anderson knocked off Greensboro's duo of Troy and Kyle Gatti 9-8 (7-3) before defeating Ferrum's Garret Freese and Danny Khourn 8-3.

Covenant held a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches against Greensboro. Michael O'Brien and Connor Shimmel gained an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. But in singles play, only Portlock and Jonathan Turner could get victories as Greensboro rallied for the win. Turner won 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles over Keanau Fletcher for his second singles win of the year.

Against Ferrum, Covenant fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. O'Brien pulled out a singles win at the No. 1 spot as he rallied for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. O'Brien had to fight off two match points in the process to earn the win. Connor Shimmel picked up the Scots' third singles win of the day as he bested Ferrum's Tyler Lee 6-4, 6-1.

Covenant will be off from competition until March 12 when they travel to face USA South rival Maryville. Both the men and the women will be in action that day. Matches start at 2 p.m.
