Women's Tennis Caps Season With Dramatic Win

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- It was a wild day for the Covenant women's tennis team. Covenant's match with GSAC foe Spelman was rescheduled from Friday to Wednesday afternoon, then heavy rain on Lookout Mountain forced the teams to find a new venue late in the afternoon.

With the final match ending after 10:30 p.m., the Lady Scots pulled off a 5-4 victory thanks to a singles win by Sara Kathryn Cole in the final match.

The victory for Covenant also avenged an 8-1 loss earlier this season to the Jaguars.

Covenant took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Sarah Carter and Kelsey Whitted teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Spelman 8-3. The Rowe sister combination of Anne Marie and Gretchen also took an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

In the singles matches, the Lady Scots fell behind in the match 3-2 after the first two singles had finished. Anne Marie Rowe secured a 6-0, 6-0 win over Spelman's Kristyn McKinney at No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3. Whitted fell in the first set before rebounding and winning the final two sets to pull out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Spelman tied the match up at 4-4 with just the No. 6 singles left. Cole gave Covenant the win as she rallied back from dropping the first set to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Covenant ends the season with a record of 4-12 during the spring season and 4-5 inside the conference. Spelman drops to 5-6 overall and 5-4 in the league.
