Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Tennis Teams Upended by Reinhardt, Carson-Newman

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant tennis teams finally got a dry day to play some matches. After having the last few matches washed away, both teams were in action on Friday afternoon as they hosted Reinhardt and Carson-Newman.

The visitors came away with victories in all four matches. The men were defeated 9-0 by both Reinhardt and Carson-Newman, while the women hung with Reinhardt before falling 6-3 and were then bested 9-0 by Carson-Newman.

The men now fall to 0-11 for the spring season, but they showed toughness as they faced superior talent in both matches. No. 1 Roy Anderson fell 6-1, 6-0 against Reinhardt and then 6-0, 6-0 to Carson-Newman. Anderson and Burch were the No. 1 doubles team for Covenant and fell in both of their matches.

The Lady Scots trailed Reinhardt 2-1 after the doubles matches ended. Anne Marie Rowe and Gretchen Rowe notched an 8-4 doubles victory over the Reinhardt pair of Alejandra Bejarano and Tara Mathis. The team of Kelsey Whitted and Sarah Carter led 3-2, but ultimately fell 8-4 in their doubles match.

In singles play, Carter fell behind by a set but then rallied to win the final two sets and take a 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Bejarano. Anne Marie Rowe also claimed a singles win as she ousted Mathis 6-4, 6-2.

Carson-Newman, an NCAA Division II member, offererd little resistance. Gretchen Rowe hung tough in her singles match as she fell 6-4, 6-2. The Rowe sisters also fell 8-3 in doubles play, while Whitted and Carter were defeated 8-2.

The women are now 1-8 on the season.

The women will compete against GSAC foe Spelman on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. The men are in action again next Friday when they travel to take on Sewanee.
