Lewis' 71 Leads Men's Golf at Maryville Invitational

ALCOA, Tenn. -- Senior Cameron Lewis fired a round one 71 to lead the Covenant men's golf team to third place after the first round of the Maryville College Invitational at Green Meadow Country Club in Alcoa, Tenn., on Friday afternoon.

As a team, Covenant posted a 303 which puts the Scots just seven shots off the lead held by Tennessee Wesleyan at 296. Sewanee is second at 302 while host Maryville is fourth after a 313. Bryan, Piedmont and Georgia Northwestern all shot 315 in round one.

Lewis is in a tie for first place individually with Travis Rodgers of Tennessee Wesleyan. The score posted by the senior is the lowest round of the season by a Covenant golfer. Freshman Alan Craig posted a 75, while sophomore James Van Nice carded a 78. Freshman Nate Haney (79) and junior Scott McKnight (81) rounded out the Covenant golfers.

"We didn't have a practice round and this course is difficult with tough greens," said head coach David Conrady. "The guys did a great job of adjusting to the conditions to post a good score."

The second and final round will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m.
