CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -- Freshman James Van Nice shot a first round score of 75 to lead the Covenant men's golf team to a tie for second place after day one at the Piedmont Invitational at The Orchard Golf & Country Club.
Covenant sits ten shots back, along with Emmanuel (Ga.) College, of leader Young Harris College with a team score of 305. Van Nice's score puts him in a tie for fifth, only three strokes back of Young Harris' Clark Melton for the overall lead. Trey Patterson and Levi Nix each shot a first round 76 which puts them in a tie for sixth. Cameron Lewis posted a score of 78.
On the women's side, Covenant's lone golfer Maggie Mauze put up a round of 92 on day one which has her in 37th place out of roughly 60 golfers.
The second and final round of the Invitational tees off at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
