CHATTANOOGA -- The Covenant tennis teams each suffered their second loss in as many days on Wednesday afternoon in Chattanooga. The Scots were defeated by GSAC rival Piedmont 7-2, while the Lady Scots were beaten 5-4 by Piedmont.
A day earlier, both Covenant teams were defeated by tough Sewanee teams. The men fall to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in conference matches, while the women are now 3-5 on the season and 3-2 in GSAC play.
On the men's side, newly crowned GSAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week John Hirte was instrumental in getting the only two wins Covenant had on the day. In doubles play, Hirte teamed with Jonathan Herberich to defeat Piedmont's Moses Das and Patrick Steck 8-4. Hirte then defeated Das again in a singles match 6-2, 6-4. Piedmont, who is perfect in GSAC matches at 6-0, won the other seven matches handily. The Scots' Tom Yates nearly forced a third set against Steck, but fell 6-2, 7-6.
In the women's competition, Covenant actually won four matches to Piedmont's three, but two forfeits by the Lady Scots gave the visitors the overall win. Madi Hyatt and Lauren Redberg paired up to beat the Lady Lions' Chelsea Prince and Meghan Smith 8-4 in doubles. Redberg then defeated Smith in singles play 6-0, 6-1. Gretchen Rowe knocked out Prince 7-5, 6-1, while Anne Marie Rowe beat Lauren Anderson 6-3, 6-2. Kelsey Whitted dropped a tough match in three sets to Morgan Reed 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Lady Scots return to the court on Monday, April 9 with a home match against Agnes Scott at 4 p.m. The matches will take place at Chattanooga Christian School. Both teams will then be in action two days later with the men playing at Berry College and the women at Salem College.
