LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Sophomore Alex Mosteller fired a second round low 72, 12 strokes better than his day one score, to lead the Covenant golf team to a third place finish at the 2012 Reeder Cup on Tuesday afternoon at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club.
LaGrange College won the event with a final round 306 to finish with a two-day score of 616. University of Mobile finished second with a total score of 631, while Covenant was just two shots behind Mobile at 633. Bethel (Tenn.) University was fourth and Sewanee placed fifth. LaGrange's Hudson Keener was the individual winner as he posted a round of 74 on Tuesday to go with his 72 from round one.
Mosteller had a stellar day for the Scots as he made three birdies in the final round. The sophomore finished fifth overall in individual play. Trey Patterson, coming off a first round score of 76, had a solid 79 to finish in fourth place. Cameron Lewis shot a 79, while Scott McKnight and Nick Blauw had an 82 and 86, respectively. Playing as just an individual, Zachary Buerkle improved five strokes from his day one 88 to finish round two with an 83. As a team, Covenant produced a final round 312, nine shots better than its first round score.
Mobile's Zach Day placed second overall with a two-day score of 153. Day posted a 75 in round one before shooting a 78 on Tuesday. LaGrange's Cory Howard finished third after shooting a 78 in round two to finish at 154 for the tournament.
Covenant will now have a few weeks off from competition before playing in the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament.
