ROME, Ga. -- The Covenant men's tennis team was defeated on the road by Berry College on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 7-2. With the loss, the Scots drop to 3-7 overall, while Berry improves to 4-8.
Covenant's only two wins of the match came through John Hirte. Hirte teamed with Jonathan Herberich to win their doubles match over Berry's Johnathan Surls and Logan Yerbey 8-2. Hirte then defeated Surls in three sets in singles competition 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.
Herberich was knocked off in singles play by Yerbey 6-0, 6-2. Calvin Chase nearly took Berry's Ben Ortman into a third set, but fell 6-1, 6-4. Andy Jones was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Jake Pullen, while Jake Sikkema and Clark Sealy lost a close doubles match 8-5 to Kyle Stapleton and Pullen.
The men have a quick turnaround as they face GSAC rival Piedmont College on Thursday. Matches start at 3:30 p.m. in Demorest, Ga.
