Covenant Tennis Falls In Regular Season Finale

CHATTANOOGA -- The Covenant Scots and Lady Scots tennis teams ended their seasons Monday afternoon, maintaining a pattern they had unfortunately been subjected to for the majority of this year.  That is, with another loss.  In head coach Katherine Smith's final season at the helm, the team struggled against stiff competition and suffered from a lack of depth through the line-up.  With the 7-2 loss, the men drop to 3-12, while the women, who fell 8-1, move to 3-13.

In today's match, it was more of the same.  The Eagles and Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College, despite below .500 records on the year, were able to pull away from Covenant with commanding victories across the board.  Bright spots for Covenant included victories at one and two singles for the men as well as a six singles win for the women.  Josh Jeremiah ended his fabulous career with a two set victory over Dusty Davis (6-3, 7-6(7)), coming from behind in both sets.  John Hirte took his match in two sets (6-1, 7-5), and Kelsey Whitted earned her point with an exhausting 13-11 win in her super tie-break (6-4, 2-6, 13-11).

Jeremiah and Hirte were indeed the primary contributors on the guys' side this year.  In each match, Covenant's line-up read Jeremiah: one, Hirte: two, and the pair teamed up in each doubles match of the season as well.  Jeremiah finished with a team-leading 12-3 singles record, while claiming the NCCAA player of the week award a stunning 3 times.  Hirte went 8-7 in singles, and the two boasted a doubles record of 9-6.

On the ladies' side, Stephanie Sizemore, Lauren Redberg, and Kelsey Whitted co-led the team in wins with 6.  Whitted proved herself capable of dominating at the bottom of the line-up, going 6-5 in that spot for the season.

With the regular season over and a missed opportunity in making the NCCAA national tournament, the Scots and Lady Scots will look forward to next season, when they will be under new leadership.
