LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant's week seven and eight consisted of the college's first break from class, but rather than taking a break, the Scots and Lady Scots were hard at work on the road. Women's volleyball went all the way to Pensacola Christian College in Florida to beat the host Lady Eagles 3-0. Women's soccer played twice. Men's golf had their third tournament of the season on Monday and Tuesday. Men's soccer continued its win streak against Emory & Henry College on Wednesday night. Though the teams may have taken a break from school, they did not take a break from their sports.
The women's volleyball team won all four of their matches this week. Their opponents included Pensacola Christian (whom they beat 3-0), Emory & Henry (3-1), Piedmont (3-0), and Agnes Scott (3-0) Colleges. Three of these games were conference wins, and their record for the GSAC is now 8-1 while it improves to 19-6 in all. Erica Adams earned 19 kills against Pensacola Christian. Against Emory & Henry, Kait Glass and Jessica Chittenden contributed to the team total of 11 blocks, which were essential to shutting down their opponents' offense. Kristin Dahlstrand's high for the week was 37 assists in the Piedmont match. The week before was equally successful, when they beat four more teams.
Men's soccer beat Piedmont College and LaGrange College during week seven. Matt Hudnut repeated his homecoming goal in overtime against Piedmont. The Scots then continued their win streak in week eight by beating Emory & Henry on Tuesday, winning 2-0. Only three and half minutes into the game, Hunter Harrison sent the ball soaring from midfield and Garrison Dale was able to head it into the goal to take the lead. John Eger was responsible for keeping the Wasps from scoring by earning 5 saves. The game was very intense with a total of 31 fouls having been committed in the 90 minutes of play. Emory & Henry even received 5 yellow cards during the game, one of which led to a free kick Dale delivered to Chris Pifer for the team's second score. The men's record now stands at 6-6-2 and 2-0 in the GSAC.
The headline for the Covenant women's soccer team during week seven was its defeat of Piedmont College, who was undefeated with a record of 12-0-1. Senior Margaret Cross had the assist of that goal and scored later in the week as the team knocked off another conference foe in LaGrange College. The first game of week eight for the Lady Scots was on Tuesday at Salem College, where they tied with the Lady Spirits. Covenant was trailing 1-0 for only 30 seconds until Cross scored with six minutes remaining to send the game into overtime. Hannah Bales had a great game, earning eight saves to keep the game tied. The Lady Scots took a total of 18 shots but were not able to come up with another to win the game. The game on Saturday against Milligan did not go as well. Milligan was able to keep Covenant from scoring, while scoring three of its own. Covenant was able to stick with them for the first half in shots on goal, each team earning 6 for the half. But after the break, Milligan scored three within a span of 16 minutes. The Lady Scots record is now 6-7-2 and 4-1-1 in the conference.
Men's golf played in their final tournament of the season before the national tournament during week eight and placed 16th out of 17 schools. Alex Mosteller placed 20th for both days, scoring a 75 and 74 for a total of 149. Covenant's next golfer was Trey Patterson who tied for 46th place with a score of 155 (84, 71).
The week held some exciting wins for Covenant over fall break, and the Scots and Lady Scots will certainly be looking to build off those wins as their seasons approach conclusion. On a different note, the Covenant men's and women's basketball programs have already started practice for the 2011-2012 campaign. Competition for them will begin in mid November.
