Covenant College Athletics Recap: Week Six

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The sporting events, celebrations, and fireworks have all faded away, drawing homecoming week to a close.  After all was said and done, week 6 did prove to be a happy homecoming for the soccer teams (the only Covenant sports actually playing at home on homecoming), while volleyball and cross-country saw mixed results on the road. The golf team was also in action.

We begin with cross-country, who after a very impressive, 1st place showing at last week's Maryville Invitational, was looking to ride the momentum to another victory in the Augusta State Invitational.  However, both teams suffered a lapse in form, as the men finished last of three teams and the women third of four.  Covenant's Jonathan Preg did finish 6th overall for the guys, though, and Hannah Matthews returned from injury to impressively place in the 5th spot.

Volleyball began a back-and-forth week six with a devastating loss at Bryan College, where they lost by an agonizingly close 2-3 scoreline on the road.  The ladies then dropped their opening two games to Dillard and Bethel Universities at the Faulkner Invitational, before rebounding to victories over Brewton Parker College and the hosts Faulkner University.  The Lady Scots volleyball team now sits at 10-10 on the year.

The men's golf team continued its fall season with a 14th place finish amongst a field of 21 teams at the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Invitational.  Freshman Alex Mosteller led the way for the Scots, posting two rounds of 77 for a team best, two-day score of 154.  Cameron Lewis and Anthony Sligh finished tied for second best on the team with scores of 155.  For the women, Jordan Agate finished 41st in a field of 98 with a two-round score of 173. The Covenant golf team will now attend the NCCAA National Tournament next week, after being invited to the event as a team for the first time in its young history.

Week six concluded on Saturday night with the homecoming soccer games.  The women played first, holding out against a pesky Asbury side that threatened on multiple occasions.  Goalkeeper Bethany Holman made several crucial saves to keep the Lady Eagles out of the net, and gave the offense a fighting chance to score the go ahead goal in the latter stages of the match.  Luckily for the Lady Scots, sophomore Kara Lee capitalized on this, and scored the dramatic, late winner with just 6 minutes left in the contest.

Unlike the women's game, the men's match against LaGrange University was never close from the beginning.  Sophomore Chris Pifer scored off a header just six minutes into the game, before a goal from Julian Allgeier, a second from Chris Pifer, and a Garrison Dale volley made it 4-0 in the first half.  Allgeier then scored again just thirty seconds into the second half, all but ending hopes of any LaGrange comeback.  The senior winger finished the night with two goals and three assists.

So that was week six in a nutshell.  After the soccer teams won, friends, fans, alumni, and family were all treated to a fantastic fireworks show above Scotland Yard. Hopefully, Covenant's athletics programs can continue to create some fireworks of their own, and keep producing some dazzling displays out on the field and court.
