Bristol, TN - The Covenant men's golf team was in action for the first round of this week's King College Invitational. Finishing the first round of the 36-hole event in the middle of the pack at sixth of eleven teams, the Scots ended the day 28 strokes behind leader and host King College.
King goes into Tuesday's round with the slimmest of leads, just one stroke ahead of Union College. King's 292 and Union's 293 put each of them well ahead of the rest of the competition, however, and thus in great position heading into Tuesday's second round. In third place was Tennessee Wesleyan College, shooting a 307 for the day and putting them just barely ahead of Milligan College, which finished the first round in fourth with a 308 and Montreat College which shot a 309, good for fifth place. Covenant shot a 320 for the day.
Individually for the Scots, sophomore
David Spencer shot a team-low 78, sophomore
Dave Wilkinson shot a 79, senior Michael Dinwiddie finished with an 81, junior
Trevor Potts shot an 82 and sophomore Michael Bowser shot an 85.
After Monday's round, a frustrated coach Tom Schreiner said, "Covenant struggled for the day. This was not a good day for us at all."
The Scots will look to come back on Tuesday and make some headway in the standings.
