NEW ORLEANS -- With the season still two days away, the Covenant men's cross country has already made some program history. The Scots were ranked No. 10 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South/Southeast preseason regional poll, announced the organization on Tuesday.

The region ranking is the first for Covenant in the program's NCAA era. The Scots are one of two USA South members ranked in the poll, joining Berea (No. 6).

Under head coach Katie Stanford, the Scots finished 12th at the 2017 NCAA South/Southeast Region meet, their highest finish in program history. Several top runners from that team return this season, including Caleb Aikens who was the 2017 USA South Rookie of the Year and produced the second-best 8k time in the program's history with his run of 25.56.6 at the NCAA region meet. In addition to Aikens, three other All-USA South runners from last season (Matthew Tueller, Matt Seitz, and Jonathan George) return for the Scots this year.

Covenant was picked to finish second in the USA South preseason coaches' poll, trailing only Berea.

The Scots open the season on Friday when they host the Mountaintop Invitational on Lookout Mountain. The women's two-mile race begins at 6 p.m. with the men's 5k following at 6:30 p.m.
