PRs Abound for Cross Country Teams at Berry Invitational

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Covenant cross country teams combined for 11 personal records on Saturday at the Berry Invitational, while the men posted a third place finish and the women a fourth place showing.

The men had three top-20 finishers and placed third among 18 teams with 107 total points. The Scots bested regional foes Oglethorpe, Sewanee, and Birmingham Southern along with USA South member Piedmont. The women were fourth, out of 23 teams, with 157 points and also finished higher than Birmingham Southern, Piedmont, and Sewanee.

The races marked the second time this year that Covenant has run the Berry course after placing well at the season-opening Georgia NCAA DIII Invitational.

All of the top seven runners on the men's side for Covenant set personal records, led by Caleb Aikens and his new best 8k time of 27:19.3 that put him in 19th overall. Matthew Tueller finished in 27:32.1 for a 24th place finish and Matt Seitz continued his strong performances of late with a time of 27:43.2 and a 25th place showing. Jonathan George was 34th at 27:53.1, while Micah Sneller rounded out the top five Covenant runners in 38th place with a time of 27:56.1.

Matthew Broussard came in 44th and a mark of 28:05.3 and Micaiah Allison was 57th with his new personal record time of 28:36.8. Zach Atchison (30:26.1) and Will Richardson (31:53.6) also set personal bests. In all, nine men's runners set personal records on the day.

Lilly Smith paced the women's team with a strong time of 24:17.9 on the 6k course. Smith's time was good for 11th overall. Michelann Settle was 15th in the event with her time of 24:39.9, while Margaret Fitch was 38th with a time of 25:51.0. Hannah Samuels (26:21.2) and Heather Hall (27:16.8) finished 60th and 87th, respectively, to complete the top five runners for Covenant.

Caroline Pepper was 109th at 28:16.7 and Anna Danek placed 114th with her time of 28:39.1. Emily Robertson (28:39.7) and Sydney Fitch (28:49.6) set personal records on the women's side.

Covenant will have a week off before competing for a conference title at the 2017 USA South Championships on Oct. 28 in Tallulah Falls, Ga.
