FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant cross country runners Caleb Aikens and Lilly Smith were recognized with weekly USA South honors for the period ending Oct. 8, announced the conference on Monday afternoon. Aikens collected Rookie Runner of the Week, while Smith earned a second straight Runner of the Week honor.
It is the second time this year that Aikens has been named a rookie runner of the week. It is the third time for Smith's runner of the week award.
A freshman from Crossville, Tenn., Aikens placed 21st among all runners at the Disney Classic on Saturday with an 8k time of 27:25. The time set a personal best for Aikens and is the fastest 8k time of the year for Covenant. Aikens' place helped Covenant to a sixth place finish, among non-Division I teams.
For Smith, it is the third time this year she has been recognized with the honor and the second straight week. The junior from Weaverville, N.C., paced the Scots with her personal record time in the 5k of 19:48 at the Disney Classic on Saturday. Smith's time led Covenant to a sixth place finish in the event.
Covenant will compete in the Berry Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Mount Berry, Ga.
