FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For a second straight week, Covenant women's cross country runner Lilly Smith has been named the USA South Runner of the Week, announced the league on Monday afternoon.
The sophomore from Weaverville, N.C., set a program record in the two-mile distance with a time of 12:46 at the UTC PowerAde Invitational on Friday. The time placed Smith 36th out of 76 runners in a field that included teams from NCAA Division I and Division III. Smith's time bested the previous program record, set by Beth Burgess in the 2011 Jacksonville State Opener, by 16 seconds.
Smith also collected the honor last week after placing second in the Mountaintop Invitational. It is also the first time since September of 2014 that a Covenant runner has earned the USA South's top weekly award in two straight weeks.
Through two events this year, Smith has set personal records in both of them and has been Covenant's top finisher.
Both Covenant teams will compete in the University of North Georgia Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Oakwood, Ga. Races begin at 8:15 a.m.
