NOTE: This is the first of a weekly summer series on athletics.covenant.edu highlighting some of the top athletic moments and accomplishments from the 2015-16 academic year. This is not a ranking, or even a full comprehensive list, because of the many great accomplishments Covenant athletic programs had during the year. We hope you enjoy a look back at the many triumphs of the Covenant Scots during the 2015-16 year. --- Andrew Mindeman, Sports Information Director.
Freshman men's cross country runner Micah Sneller came to Covenant with a somewhat limited background in running cross country after competing in the sport only as a senior in high school. The Lancaster, Pa., native certainly made a quick adjustment to the sport at the collegiate level.
Sneller put together a tremendous freshman season and earned USA South Rookie of the Year honors and was the 2015 USA South individual champion. In the process, Sneller also earned a spot on the All-USA South first team. Sneller led all Scots runners in six of seven events on the year and was named USA South Rookie Runner of the Week twice. On the year, Sneller had three top-five finishes.
But it was his performance at the USA South Championships that set him apart from all others in the conference. Sneller ran a personal best in the 8k race finishing in 28:08.9 to stave off several of the league's best, including two-time USA South Runner of the Year in Maryville's Sean Hagstrom. Sneller's championship marked the second straight year a Covenant runner won the conference meet.
Sneller also placed third at the season-opening Mountaintop Invitational, helping Covenant to a team victory, and had a fourth-place finish to lead the Scots to another team title at the Maryville Invitational.
