GREENVILLE, S.C. -- In a meet filled with NCAA Division I competition, the Covenant cross country teams fared well at the third annual Furman University Classic on Saturday morning.
The women placed 13th out of 22 NCAA Division II, III and NAIA teams, while the men were 17th of 19.
Spookie Eaves led the way on the women's side with a personal best time in the 6k of 24:16.89 and a 36th place finish overall. Ruthie Cargill had another solid showing with her time of 25:02.68 which was good for 60th in the 206 participant field. Margaret Fitch also set a new personal best time as she completed the course in 25:22 to place 70th in the event.
Emory had five runners finish in the top 15 and the Eagles took home the team title among non-Division I teams. Covenant finished 13th with 337 total points, two spots ahead of USA South rival Piedmont. Auburn was the team champion among Division I participants.
On the men's side, Covenant's top three finishers were freshmen led by Micah Sneller's 28:53.36 8k run to finish 89th. Reed Vaughn completed the course in 29:42.08, while Nathan Bierema ran it in 30:25.25. Hunter Rasmussen was not far behind Bierema with a time of 30:27.7. Zach Atchison set a new personal record by nearly two minutes with his finish of 31:11.59.
Covenant finished one spot behind Piedmont with 460 total points. Lee took home the team title among non-Division I teams and host Furman was the champion on the Division I side.
