Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Oct. 28-Nov. 2)

Covenant teams wrapped up regular season play last week and a few began conference postseason events. The cross country teams were the big winners as the men captured the USA South title, while the women had Beth Burgess claim the top spot. Men's soccer fell in a shootout to Averett. Volleyball won three regular season matches and men's basketball played its first exhibition game.

BY THE NUMBERS:

8: Number of conference titles in program history for men's cross country. The men captured the USA South title on Saturday in Greensboro for the program's first official Division III conference championship.

27:55.69: The time for cross country's Stephen Dillon, which set a new personal record, as he led Covenant to its title. Dillon placed second overall in the event and Covenant had three runners inside the top six.

24:51.06: The 6k time for women's cross country's Beth Burgess. Burgess won the USA South individual crown with that time on Saturday to lead Covenant to a second place team finish. Burgess became the first Covenant women's runner since Tera Woods in 2011 to win a conference individual title.

4: Number of runners on USA South all-conference first or second teams for both the men's and women's cross country teams. The women placed Burgess and Spookie Eaves on the first team with Esther Anderson and Anna Hankal on the second team. On the men's side, Dillon, Zach Smith and Matt Gorter were on the first team while Jack Williams earned second team honors.

11: Number of saves for men's soccer goalkeeper Shuler Polk in Saturday's first round USA South tournament match. It was a season-high for the senior.

Nov. 19, 2010: Last time the Covenant men's soccer team lost in a shootout. The Scots tied Averett 0-0 on Saturday, but fell in penalty kicks 5-3. Oakland City was the last team to defeat the Scots in PKs.

3: Seed number from the South Division for the Covenant volleyball team. The Lady Scots head to Martinsville, Va., for the USA South Conference tournament beginning on Friday against second-seeded Meredith from the North Division. Covenant is 19-10 overall on the year and finished 11-5 in conference play.

14-2: Scoring run for the men's basketball team to start the second half at NCAA Division I member Kennesaw State on Saturday. The Scots trailed 41-25 at the half before trimming the deficit to four just over four minutes into the second half. Covenant ultimately fell 95-66

NOTES:

Matt Gorter and Ruthie Cargill were honored as Covenant's representatives on the USA South all-sportsmanship teams for men's and women's cross country... Shuler Polk was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team on Thursday as he has excelled both on the field and in the classroom. He is now eligible for Academic All-America voting which begins this week... Women's soccer plays at Averett today at 2:30 p.m. in their first round USA South match...
