FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Freshmen cross country runners Abby Irwin and Eliot Kaufmann were both honored with weekly USA South awards, announced the conference on Monday afternoon. Irwin was named Rookie Runner of the Week, while Kaufmann was the Rookie and Runner of the Week.
The honor for Irwin is her first of the year. Kaufmann's awards mark the third time this season he has swept both honors.
Irwin, a freshman from Issaquah, Wash., placed 58th out of 191 runners at the Berry Invitational on Saturday with a personal record time in the 6k of 25:24.5. Her finish helped Covenant to a 10th place team finish in the highly-competitive field featuring two Division I schools and several Division III powers.
Kaufmann continued his stellar season with a personal best of 27:11.2 in the 8k event at the Berry Invitational. The freshman from New York, finished 22nd overall out of 185 runners and led Covenant to an 11th place team finish.

Covenant will have a week off before competing in the USA South championships on Nov. 1 in Greensboro, N.C. The men are the defending conference champions, while Beth Burgess will look to repeat as the women's individual champion.
