LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Freshman Spookie Eaves led the Covenant women's cross country team to a first place finish with a time of 13:24 in the Scots Opener dual meet on Covenant's campus Friday evening. The Covenant men also took first place as Stephen Dillon and Stephen Harper paced the Scots with second and third-place finishes, respectively.
The event was the first time Covenant had hosted a race in several years as the cross country trails have been worked on extensively. A very boisterous crowd, that included school president Dr. J. Derek Halvorson, cheered on both Covenant and Maryville runners to the finish line.
Eaves led a pack of five Lady Scots to cross the finish line first in her debut as a Covenant runner. Beth Burgess (13:43), Aften Whitmore (13:56), Esther Anderson (14:08), and Emily Davis (14:27) rounded out the top five finishers in the two-mile race. Maryville's Emily Guillaume and Camilla Loggins finished sixth and seventh with times of 14:28 and 15:39. Melanie White and Ruthie Cargill placed eighth and ninth to put seven Lady Scots runners in the top 10.
The Lady Scots ran an average time of 13:55.60, more than two minutes faster than Maryville, as Covenant ran on a course they are most familiar with. The Covenant men ran an average time of 20:24, which bested Maryville's 21:22 average.
In the men's 5K, Covenant's pair of Stephens, Dillon and Harper, finished with times of 19:28 and 19:42, respectively. Covenant's Micah Schreiner (20:02), Jack Williams (21:22), and Jake Sikkema (21:24) finished in spots five through seven to give the Scots 23 total points. Maryville's Travis Wilson ran a strong 18:41 and took the top individual honor.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action next weekend on September 7 when they participate in the UTC PowerAde Invitational in Chattanooga.
