Volleyball Picks Up Wins in Quad-Match Behind Strong Middle Play

DECATUR, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a pair of wins over Piedmont and Brevard on Saturday in a USA South quad-match from Woodruff Gymnasium.

With the wins, Covenant clinched the No. 3 seed in the West Division in the conference tournament beginning Tuesday.

The Scots improved to 10-17 on the season and wrapped up conference play at 9-5. Piedmont is now 10-18, and 6-8 in USA South competition while Brevard dropped to 2-25 and 2-12.

MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Piedmont 1 (12-25, 28-26, 25-15, 25-21)

Jess Chesrown posted a career-high 15 kills while Alexa Spurling chipped in with 14 of her own with no errors.

Leah Buys posted 36 assists in the contest and Emily Moore dug 18 attacks to pace the Scots.

The middle hitters for the Scots combined for 32 of the 47 kills in the match while hitting an efficient .408 in the contest.

Piedmont took set one after jumping out to a 22-9 advantage before taking the only set from the Scots on the day 25-12.

After a back-and-forth affair set number two was even at 25. The Lions recorded an ace to take a 26-25 lead, but Riley Howe found the floor to end a three-point spurt and take the set 28-26.

In set number three the Scots jumped out to a quick four-point advantage at 8-4. Covenant slowly stretched the lead to 21-12 before claiming four of the final seven points to win the set 25-15.

In the third set, Covenant hit a dazzling .400 attacking percentage with 13 kills on 25 attacks and only three errors.

In the fourth set, the Scots found an 11-6 lead before going on a 5-1 run to stretch the lead to 16-8 which proved to be enough wiggle room to capture the final set of the match 25-21.

Piedmont was led by Alina Roberts with 13 kills and Ali Wilkins with 42 assists. Lainey Choiniere led the Lion defense with 28 digs.

MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Brevard 0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-13)

The Covenant middle hitters continued their fantastic play as Spurling led all players with 11 kills with only one error and Allie Jakes posted eight kills and zero errors.

Buys led the contest with 27 assists while Moore paced the match with 13 digs.

In the second match, the middle hitters combined for 20 of 34 Covenant kills with only five errors for a .333 clip.

The Scots took a 7-6 lead in the opening set and never looked back, using an 8-0 run to race out to an 18-8 advantage. Covenant went on to win the set 25-14.

In the second set Covenant hit at a .290 clip. The Scots grabbed the first point off a Buys ace and wrapped up the 5-1 run with a Buys kill. Covenant extended their lead to 17-8 with a 7-1 run to put the set out of reach and gain a 2-0 match advantage.

Set number three went back-and-forth until the Scots used a five-point spurt to take a 10-6 lead. A Meriel Chupp put one away to win the final set 25-13 and complete the sweep and wrap up the regular season.

Breanna O'Shields and Julie McGahy recorded five kills each to lead the Tornadoes as Mariana Rodriguez posted five assists and 12 digs to lead Brevard.


The Scots travel to Montgomery, Alabama to take on No. 6 West seed Piedmont in the opening round of the USA South Tournament. The winner of the match will take on the No. 2 West seed Huntingdon.
