DECATUR, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team split a USA South quad-match on Saturday afternoon from Woodruff Gymnasium on the campus of Agnes Scott.
The Scots dropped the first match against Maryville, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-15), before wrapping up the day with a, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-12), sweep over Berea.
Covenant is now 8-16 and 7-5 in USA South play. Maryville improved to 20-6 and remained a perfect 11-0 in conference play while Berea falls to 11-14 and 6-6 in USA South action.
MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Berea 0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-12)
Allie Jakes came alive with 13 kills on 22 attacks and only two errors to hit at a .500 clip with two blocks to help lead the Scots to a sweep over Berea.
Meriel Chupp hit .400 with 11 kills on 25 swings and only one error to support in the effort. Leah Buys posted 29 assists while Emily Moore recorded 14 digs and Sara Delk dug 10 attacks in the contest.
Covenant jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the opening set before stretching it to 14-8 off back-to-back aces from Moore. The Mountaineers slowly began crawling back into the set with a six-point run to cut the lead to two and 20-18. The Scots answered and Chupp wrapped up the set with a kill to take the first set 25-21.
In set number two the Scots had a 4-1 advantage before Berea evened things at 11. Covenant answered with a 10-2 run to jump out to a 21-13 lead. After Berea got a kill to make things 21-14 the Scots posted four straight points including two aces from Buys.
Set number three looked much like the second one as Covenant jumped in front 7-2. The Scots then used a 9-1 rally to stretch the lead to 23-10 and put the set out of reach, winning the set 25-12 to take the match.
Carolina Robles and Allana Knowles led the Mountaineers with eight kills each. Adrienne Roberts led the offense with 17 assists and posted a double-double with 11 digs.
MATCH ONE: Maryville 3, Covenant 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-15)
Riley Howe led the way for Covenant with eight kills and nine digs to lead the team in a, 3-0, loss to Maryville to open up the day.
Buys recorded 21 assists on the day while Alexa Spurling posted three blocks in the contest.
Maryville got the match started jumping out to a 16-5 lead. Covenant was able to trim the lead down to six at 22-16 on a 7-2 run before the northern Scots rattled off three straight points to wrap up the first set.
Set number two was close early on as it saw three ties and one lead change. Covenant went on a 5-1 run to take an early, 11-10, lead. Maryville answered with an 8-1 stretch to take an, 18-12, lead before taking the set 25-15.
Set three saw Maryville jump out to a 7-3 lead. Covenant was able to trim to two at 9-7 before Maryville used an eight-point spurt to stretch the lead to 10 and 18-8. The southern Scots continued to fight to cut the lead back to six before Maryville wrapped up the match with a four-point run.
Maryville was led by Maggie Matthews with 10 kills and 11 digs to complete the double-double. Meredith Bonee led the team with 14 assists while Brianne Sidner paced Maryville with 15 digs.
Covenant plays host to Sewanee for senior night on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
