LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team used 15 service aces en route to a, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14), sweep over Agnes Scott from inside the Barnes PE Center on Wednesday night.
The 15 aces set a new season-high for the Scots, as the offense was running on all cylinders setting another high by hitting at a .300 clip.
After the Scotties rimmed the lead to 8-5 Covenant was able to answer with a four-point spurt to stretch the lead to 12-5 in the opening set. The score proved to be enough to hold Agnes Scott off as Meriel Chupp recorded a kill to end the set 25-15.
Chupp led the double-digit attackers with a .400 hitting percentage with 5 kills on 10 attacks and only one error.
Set number two saw Agnes Scott jump out to a 7-3 lead to force a Covenant timeout. The Scots then rallied with a 7-0 run and took a 10-8 lead. The set saw five lead changes and three ties as Covenant took the final lead on a Chupp kill and a 19-18 to spark a seven-point spurt to give the Scots a, 2-0, match advantage.
Set number three saw a pair of ties, and lead changes early on. After being knotting things at four on a Lindsey Stephens kills the Scots jump-started a 12-1 run capped off by a Heidi Burkett kill. Covenant never relented and a Taylor Caldwell and Burkett block gave the Scots the final set 25-14, and their third sweep on the season.
Burkett played in only the final set but led all athletes with a .571 attacking percentage with four kills on seven swings and no errors.
Agnes Scott was led by Tiara White with eight kills as Caroline Irving posted 18 assists. Annie Weimerskirch had 12 digs to lead the Scottie defense.
