LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team dropped a set of matches in a USA South quad-match on Saturday from the Barnes P.E. Center.
The Scots fell to Huntingdon, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16), to open the day. Covenant then wrapped up the afternoon with a, 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-20), loss to LaGrange.
Covenant is now 6-15 overall and 5-4 in USA South competition. LaGrange improved to 8-16 and 5-4 in the conference while Huntingdon finished the day 17-12 and 6-2.
MATCH TWO: LaGrange 3, Covenant 0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-20)
Covenant had jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the match. The Panthers then began slowly cutting into the lead until they were able to knot things up at 12. The two teams traded points until the Panthers took a three-point 22-19 advantage late in the set. The Scots then rallied to even things at 24 before LaGrange had back-to-back kills to take the first set 26-24.
In set number two the Panthers raced out to a 5-0 lead. The Scots tried to make a late comeback cutting the lead back to four at 24-20. LaGrange was able to pick up a kill to take set two 25-20.
Set three looked like it would be the exact same as LaGrange jumped out to a 5-0 lead but a 3-1 Scot run tied things at 20. The Panthers thought took the next five points to take the set and end the match with a 25-20 decision.
Jazzlyn Kenner led the Panther offense with 11 kills followed closely by Leigha Reynolds with 10. Kirsten Boyd recorded 33 assists while Reynolds and Samantha James dug 14 attacks to lead the defense.
MATCH ONE: Huntingdon 3, Covenant 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16)
The Scots dropped a, 3-0, decision to Huntingdon to open up the quad-match.
Jakes led the offense with seven kills as Buys posted 20 assists. Moore and Delk had eight digs each to pace the Scot defense.
The two teams looked even early on before the Hawks jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the opening set. Huntingdon eventually stretched the lead to 11 with a 20-9 advantage. The Scots tried to climb their way back into it with a 7-3 run to cut the lead to seven and a 23-16 score. Covenant then fought off two set points before the Hawks took the set 25-18.
The second set was a game of runs before the Hawks used an 8-2 run to take a 19-12 lead en route to the 25-16 victory.
Set three saw Huntingdon jump out to a 5-1 advantage that proved to be too much for the Scots as they took the match with a 25-16 third set victory.
Amy Tyma recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs to lead Huntingdon in both categories. Ashley Murphy posted 20 assists while Lexie DeVuyst dug 11 attacks.
The Scots play host to Agnes Scott on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
