Volleyball Falls To Transylvania

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team opened up the Berry National Invitational with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-7, 25-17) loss to Transylvania on Friday night at the Cage Center on the campus of Berry College.

Junior Leah Buys paced the team defensively with 15 digs. Riley Howe chipped in with six digs of her own to go along with three aces. Emily Moore was able to record 10 assists on the evening.

Transylvania (3-2) jumped out in the opening set taking 12 of the first 15 points and the Scots could not get anything going offensively. The Pioneers went on to take the set 25-9, hitting at an efficient .500 clip.

The Pioneers continued their strong hitting in set number two committing only two errors in the set to go with 16 kills for a commanding 25-7 victory.

Covenant (0-4) did not give up giving Transylvania a tough third set. Howe recorded her third ace of the match to give the Scots an 8-6 lead early on. The Pioneers then rattled off five straight points to take an 11-8, and one they would not relinquish on their way to the 25-17 victory to complete the sweep.

Ellie Stigger led the Pioneers with 15 kills and four blocks. Jordan Horne was able to post double-digit kills of her own with 11. Hannah Talkers recorded 39 assists and Sylvie Miller dug 14 attacks to pace Transylvania.

The Scots wrap up at the Berry National Invitational tomorrow as they take on defending national champions Emory at 3 p.m. before concluding the weekend with Rhodes at 5 p.m.
