LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Alexa Spurling and Hannah Harris had 15 kills apiece and they led the Covenant volleyball team to a come-from-behind, five-set victory over visiting Maryville in a key USA South West Division showdown on Friday night inside Barnes PE Center.
Set scores were 25-17, 16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-11.
Covenant (9-10, 7-1 USA South) played its fifth five-set in the last nine matches overall and is 3-2 in those contests. The Scots also extended their conference regular season home winning streak to 20, dating back to the 2014 season.
The Scots won the first set in convincing fashion. Covenant hit .263 as a team with 15 kills in the frame and used a 10-2 run to seize a comfortable lead at 17-8 midway through. Three kills from Harris over the final four Covenant points gave the Scots the set one victory.
Momentum shifted over the next two sets, however. Maryville (10-8, 5-3 USA South) controlled play in both games, gained sizable leads and pulled away from Covenant to grab a 2-1 match lead.
Covenant battled back in the fourth. In a back-and-forth set, the Scots took an 18-14 lead after a Harris kill. Up 21-17, Covenant looked poised to roll to the set win, but Maryville responded with a 6-1 run to take a 23-22 lead. However, Covenant scored the final three points of the frame, highlighted by two Spurling kills sandwiched around a kill from Sara Delk, to force a fifth set.
The fifth set was the story of the whole match: Maryville leading early, but Covenant coming through in the clutch to seize victory.
Maryville grabbed an 8-4 lead at the switch, but Covenant rattled off an 8-1 run to take a 12-9 lead after another Delk kill. Covenant then took advantage of two Maryville service errors to get to match point before another Maryville miscue gave the home Scots the win.
Spurling was fantastic all night as she recorded a career-high 15 kills and a .414 hitting percentage. Harris also had 15 kills to go with four digs. Delk finished with 13 kills and 18 digs, while Sophie Puertas also had a double-double with her career-best 48 assists and 14 digs. Emily Moore totaled a match-high 23 digs and Hannah Stewart added 21.
Maryville got 13 kills and 17 digs from Brianne Sidner, while Meredith Bonee nearly had a triple double with her 27 assists, 18 digs, and seven kills. Allison Botts had 21 digs in the loss.
Covenant will have a short turnaround as the Scots head to Demorest, Ga., for a USA South tri-match on Saturday. A time change puts the Scots facing LaGrange at 2 p.m. followed by host Piedmont at 4 p.m.
