BREVARD, N.C. -- Aided by a career-high 15 kills from Sara Delk and 12 kills from Alexa Spurling, the Covenant volleyball team fought off Brevard in a 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-13, 28-26) victory on Saturday afternoon in USA South action inside Boshamer Gymnasium.
Covenant (8-10, 6-1 USA South) had a huge advantage in total kills on the afternoon as the Scots tallied 54 and hit .170 as a group, while holding Brevard (0-16, 0-7 USA South) to 34 kills and a .074 hitting percentage.
Delk and Spurling were a major reason for the offensive outburst. Delk recorded her second double-double of the year as she had 15 digs to go along with her 15 kills, while Spurling added five blocks and five digs in the winning effort. Allie Jakes and Hannah Harris had eight kills each and Lindsey Stephens recorded five kills. Sophie Puertas tallied her ninth double-double of the season with a career-high-tying 47 assists to go with 14 digs and three kills
Covenant stormed to a 1-0 match lead with a 25-12 set one victory. The Scots hit .342 in the set with 15 kills as a group. A 7-1 run early in the set, highlighted by kills from Spurling, Stephens, and Harris, gave the Scots a 9-3 lead. Covenant would cruise to the set win as a kill from Jakes ended the frame.
After Brevard tied the match with a set two victory, Covenant regained control with a strong third set. Covenant had 13 kills in the third and used a 9-1 run to start the game to take a 2-1 match edge.
The fourth set saw Brevard push the Scots to the limit. The set went back-and-forth as it saw 12 ties and three lead changes. Covenant went ahead 23-20 on a Delk kill and the Scots got to their first match point at 24-21 after a Brevard error. However, the host Tornados answered and scored three straight to send the set into extra points. Tied at 26, Spurling keyed the final, clinching points as her kill and subsequent ace gave Covenant the victory.
Sydney Fox led Brevard with 13 kills to go with 10 digs. Hannah Jenkins added 10 kills, while Hannah Gordon had 27 assists. Jordan Lloyd and Mariana Rodriguez had 21 digs apiece.
Covenant will host Maryville in a key USA South match on Friday, Oct. 12. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Barnes PE Center.
