SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Despite a valiant effort in the third set, the Covenant volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-23) loss at Sewanee on Tuesday night inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Covenant drops to 0-4 on the year, while Sewanee goes to 4-1.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, the visiting Scots nearly pulled off a comeback in the third set. Down 18-12 in the frame, Covenant went on a 10-4 scoring run to knot the score at 22 apiece. Alexa Spurling was a catalyst during the stretch as she recorded two kills and her back-to-back service aces evened the score at 22-22. Lindsey Stephens also had two kills to aid in the rally.
After both teams traded the next two points, Sewanee halted the Covenant run with consecutive points to earn the 25-23 set win and the match victory.
Spurling led Covenant with eight kills and a .389 hitting percentage to go along with three total blocks and two aces. Hannah Harris added five kills and Stephens ended with four. Sophie Puertas totaled 13 assists and eight digs, while Allie Jakes had five total blocks. Hannah Stewart led the Scots with nine digs in the defeat.
The first set was back-and-forth as it saw six ties and five lead changes. Most of those exchanges occurred within the first half of the set as Sewanee broke a 7-7 tie with four straight points and the Tigers would not trail again en route to a 25-16 game win. Sewanee tallied 15 kills in the set.
In the second set, Covenant took a 6-1 lead after two Sewanee errors mixed in with a Spurling solo block and a Harris and Spurling combination block. The lead was 11-6 for the Scots after a Harris kill, but Sewanee answered with an 11-3 run to gain a 17-14 lead. Covenant would get within 19-18 on a Harris and Jakes block, however Sewanee ended the frame by scoring six of the final seven points.
Lilly Reilly and Destiny Stewart had 11 kills each for Sewanee, while Constance Connolly served up 32 assists to go with six kills and 11 digs. Olivia Nichols led all players with her 15 digs.
Covenant will travel to Maryville, Tenn., on Saturday to play two neutral site contests. The Scots face Rhodes at 2 p.m. and then Lynchburg at 4 p.m. inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
