LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Coming off a USA South championship and a run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017, the Covenant volleyball team will look for new challenges as head coach Joanna Ehman recently released the 2018 schedule.

The Scots are slated for 28 regular season matches, with five of those contests against 2017 NCAA Tournament participants. Covenant will also face six new opponents and travel to two prominent, early season tournaments.

The season begins on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Emory Classic in Atlanta. The Scots will face SUNY New Paltz on Aug. 31, followed by contests with Texas-Tyler and Emory on Saturday, Sept. 1. Emory advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament a season ago, while New Paltz and Texas-Tyler will be new foes for the Scots.

The second major tournament Covenant will compete in is the Pikes Peak Challenge in Colorado Springs, Colo., hosted by perennial power Colorado College, on Sept. 14-15. The Scots square off with Colorado College, which ended last season ranked No. 4 in the nation, and then Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Sept. 14. Covenant ends the trip with a showdown against 2017 NCAA Tournament participant Christopher Newport on Sept. 15.

Covenant will look to keep Barnes PE Center a tough place to play when it opens the home slate on Sept. 11 against Mississippi University for Women. The Scots went 11-0 at home last season, marking the first undefeated home record in program history.

USA South play begins on Sept. 19 when the Scots travel to Maryville. On Sept. 22, Covenant will host a league tri-match with contests against LaGrange and Piedmont. Maryville comes to Barnes PE Center on Oct. 12.

Covenant will step out of league play a few times late in the month of September and three times in October. The Scots will host Birmingham Southern on Sept. 26 and Berry on Oct. 16. Covenant defeated Birmingham Southern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017 before falling in five sets to Berry in the second round.

The regular season will conclude on Oct. 27 at home against Brevard and Pensacola Christian. Senior Day activities will take place during the day.

The USA South Tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 30 with the top six teams in each division qualifying. The top two seeds in each division will host first round and quarterfinal rounds matches, while the semifinals and championship will be played at the highest remaining seed on Nov. 2-3.

  • 2017 NCAA Tournament teams on the schedule include: Birmingham Southern, Emory, Berry, Christopher Newport, and Colorado College. Birmingham Southern, Emory, Berry, and Christopher Newport all played in the Atlanta Regional with Covenant last year.
  • This year will mark the first meetings all-time with New Paltz, Texas-Tyler, Mississippi University for Women, Colorado College, Christopher Newport, and Johnson & Wales (Colo.)
  • Matches against Brevard will count for USA South standings this year. However, Brevard is not eligible to compete in the USA South Tournament.
