Nationally-Ranked Hendrix Downs Volleyball in Four

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Playing a second nationally-ranked opponent in less than a week, the Covenant volleyball team fell to No. 25 Hendrix 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-6, 25-17) in non-conference action on Thursday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (12-11) also hosted No. 6-ranked Emory on Saturday marking the first two ranked opponents to play at Barnes PE Center in the NCAA Division III era of the program. Hendrix (15-5) is ranked 25th in the latest AVCA Top 25.

Ginny Moore led Covenant with 15 kills, 12 digs and a pair of assisted blocks in the loss. Schuyler Moore tallied 24 assists, 10 digs and four kills, while Morgan Opgenorth had seven kills and three combined blocks. Jessica Seehorn totaled 13 digs with Hannah Stewart collecting 11. Allie Jakes contributed a match-high five assisted blocks to go with two kills.

Hendrix never trailed in the first set as the visiting Warriors took a 25-15 victory. Covenant trailed 12-10 after a Ginny Moore kill, but Hendrix went on a 10-1 scoring run to grab a 22-11 advantage in the game.

The second set featured seven ties and a pair of lead changes, but Covenant accumulated 15 kills and a .286 hitting percentage in the frame to pull away for the win. The key run for the Lady Scots came with the score tied at 12 before Covenant scored six straight, highlighted by a pair of Haley Taylor kills, to take an 18-12 lead. Covenant would hold a comfortable lead the rest of the way and another kill from Ginny Moore ended the set and tied the match at 1-1.

Hendrix responded with a strong third set as the Warriors hit at a .440 clip with 13 kills to take a 25-6 win and a 2-1 match lead. In the fourth, the teams went back-and-forth through the first few points before Hendrix built a small lead that it would not relinquish. 

MC Rogers and Lauren Dwyer each had 15 kills to lead Hendrix, while Laura Petrisin had 11. Rogers also recorded 14 digs. Allison Gaia added 28 assists and 14 digs. Leila Matsumoto had a match-high 18 digs in the win.

UP NEXT

Covenant will travel to Atlanta, Ga., and Oglethorpe University for a tri-match on Saturday. The Lady Scots face Rhodes at 3 p.m. before playing Oglethorpe at 5 p.m.
