Volleyball Goes 1-2 at Emory Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team faced stiff competition over the weekend in the Emory Invitational, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta. The Lady Scots defeated Transylvania on Friday 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15), but fell twice on Saturday by 3-1 scores to Mary Washington (25-17, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20) and Wellesley (19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18).

With the 1-2 weekend, Covenant drops to 3-7 on the year.

In the 3-1 win over Transylvania on Friday, four different players recorded at least seven kills and Covenant won the final two sets in convincing fashion to take the four-set victory. Allie Jakes led Covenant with eight kills, while Hannah Harris, Morgan Opgenorth and Jessica Seehorn all had seven kills apiece.

Schuyler Moore had 36 assists and 12 digs in the win, while Emily Moore had a team-high 14 digs. Seehorn also chipped in with 12 digs, while Jakes and Opgenorth had a solo block and four block assists each.

On Saturday, Covenant faced Mary Washington to open the day. After falling in the first set, the Lady Scots rallied to take set two by a 25-22 score and nearly took the third before before falling 26-24. Mary Washington concluded the win with a 25-20 set four victory.

Ginny Moore had 16 kills and 28 digs in the loss, while Schuyler Moore had 40 assists and 11 digs. Seehorn contributed 10 kills and eight digs and Emily Moore had 15 digs.

In the finale of the Invitational, Covenant took the first set over Wellesley 25-19, but Wellesley took the final three sets to take the four-set victory.

Ginny Moore again led the Lady Scots with 18 kills to go along with 14 digs. Schuyler Moore produced 35 assists and 11 digs and Jakes had eight kills and three block assists. Seehorn added four kills and a team-best 19 digs with Hannah Stewart chipping in 13 digs. Haley Taylor added six kills in the defeat.


Covenant will open USA South play next weekend against Methodist and William Peace on Friday, Sept. 23 in Winston-Salem, N.C., on the campus of Salem College.
