MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Covenant volleyball team split its first two matches at the Blues City Invite, hosted by Rhodes College, on Friday night. Covenant fell to Sewanee 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-23, 31-29) before responding with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19) victory over Millsaps in the nightcap.
Covenant goes to 2-3 on the year with the split.
MATCH ONE: Sewanee 3, Covenant 1
Covenant took the first set in commanding fashion, but Sewanee rallied to take the final three sets, including the fourth set in extra points, to earn a 3-1 win.
Ginny Moore led all players with 17 kills and registered a double-double with 18 digs to go along with three service aces. Schuyler Moored also recorded a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs, while Allie Jakes had eight kills and Hannah Stewart 11 digs.
Covenant took advantage of Sewanee errors and 10 team kills to take a 25-13 set one victory. Sewanee took the next two sets to go ahead 2-1 in the match. The fourth set featured 10 ties and seven lead changes, but Sewanee rallied from a 29-28 deficit to score the final three points for the win and the match.
Diamond Stewart had 13 kills and 13 digs to lead Sewanee, who remained unbeaten at 5-0 on the year. Sara Jayne Sutton tallied 24 digs and Anna Wilson had 25 assists and 16 digs in the win for the Tigers.
MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Millsaps 1
For a second time in a week, Covenant defeated Millsaps in four sets. The Lady Scots also took down the Majors in four sets at the Berry Invitational on Sept. 2.
Ginny Moore again paced the Lady Scots with 14 kills and 24 digs, while Schuyler Moore had 40 assists, 23 digs and six kills in the win. Jessica Seehorn tied a career-high with 12 kills to go with nine digs, while Hannah Harris contributed eight kills and a pair of block assists. Allie Jakes and Chloe Storm each had six kills and Emily Moore totaled 18 digs on the defensive side.
Covenant dropped the first set 25-19, but rebounded in the second with a 25-23 win to tie the match. The Lady Scots took the third set after tallying 15 kills and limiting the Majors to a .022 hitting percentage in the set. In the fourth, Covenant led for much of the set and would claim the victory on a Ginny Moore kill.
Morgan Vincent led Millsaps (1-5) with 13 kills.
Covenant will play Birmingham Southern on Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT before playing the host Rhodes Lynx at 4 p.m. EDT to conclude the Invite.
