Newman Tabbed as Assistant Volleyball Coach

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant volleyball head coach Joanna Ehman announced that Kristy Newman has been named the program's full-time assistant coach.

"I'm excited to have Kristy join our program," Ehman said. "She understands the hard work it takes to be able to compete with excellence. I'm confident she will be able to use that to inspire our players to build on the success we had this year and establish a culture of competing well at a high level."

Newman comes to Covenant after a one-year stint as the assistant coach at NAIA member St. Andrews University in North Carolina. At St. Andrews, Newman assisted head coach Holly Mandeville with day-to-day responsibilities while also serving as the head coach of the JV program. St. Andrews went 21-10 overall in 2015 and finished fourth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference during the regular season.

Additionally, Newman was an academic advisor and a resident hall director at the University.

Newman graduated from Maryville College in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management. She played under longtime head coach Kandis Schram and accumulated 308 career kills at outside hitter. Newman is a Chattanooga-area native and played high school volleyball at Sale Creek High School.

"I am so excited for the opportunity to be here at Covenant and get back involved in Division III athletics after being away from it for a year," Newman said.

Newman has previous volleyball coaching experience with the K2 Volleyball Club in Louisville, Tenn., where she was a head coach, and as an assistant coach with the Foothills Volleyball Club in Maryville, Tenn.

"Her playing experience at Maryville combined with the recruiting and coaching experience she had at St. Andrews will serve her well as she joins the coaching staff here at Covenant," Ehman added.
