LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant volleyball senior Chelsea VanDyk has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-South Region team, announced the organization on Thursday afternoon.
VanDyk was one of two USA South players honored as Averett's Hannah Shields was named to the team for a second straight year. VanDyk becomes the first Covenant player to earn All-Region honors from the AVCA at the Division III level.
The senior from Manhattan, Mont., capped a tremendous career this season averaging 3.08 kills per set and hitting .301, tied for first in the USA South. VanDyk earned All-USA South first team honors for a third consecutive year and was a four-time first team all-conference performer. VanDyk was named USA South Player of the Week on Sept. 28 after tallying 4.82 kills per set while hitting at a .588 clip. VanDyk had 16 kills and five total blocks to help lead Covenant to a 3-1 victory over Maryville in the USA South Tournament championship last Saturday.
She ends her career at Covenant with 1,377 kills, second-most in program history, and the program's career leader in hitting percentage at .327. VanDyk also holds or ranks high among several other statistical categories.
Covenant saw its historical season end on Thursday with a 3-0 loss to Hendrix in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Scots end the year 19-13 overall.
