Volleyball Rallies for 11th Straight USA South Win

DEMOREST, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team fell behind 2-1 and trailed midway through the fourth set before rallying for a 3-2 victory at Piedmont on Tuesday night inside Cave Arena in Demorest. Set scores were 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12.

The victory is the 11th consecutive in USA South play for Covenant and moves the Lady Scots to 13-9 overall and 11-1 in league play. Covenant also maintains its lead in the South division of the conference. Piedmont drops to 15-12 on the year and 8-5 in the USA South.

Trailing 2-1 in the match, Covenant found itself down 16-12 in the fourth set. But the Lady Scots responded in a big way as they outscored the host Lions 13-3 over the final 16 points to claim the set win and send the match into a deciding set. Ginny Moore had three kills and two total blocks during the stretch run, while Morgan Opgenorth also tallied a pair of assisted blocks.

In the fifth set, Covenant grabbed a 7-4 lead after a Hannah Rogers kill followed by a Piedmont attack error. The Lions rallied and took a 12-11 lead, but again Covenant had an answer. After a Piedmont error, Opgenorth and Ginny Moore produced back-to-back kills and Chelsea VanDyk's service ace completed the comeback victory.

Opgenorth had a career night with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .323 to go along with five total blocks. Ginny Moore had 16 kills and 20 digs, while VanDyk tallied 14 kills and a .375 percentage with a pair of solo blocks. Schuyler Moore set a career-high with 57 assists, setting the single-match program record for assists in the 25-point era, along with nine kills and and nine digs. 

Covenant also received eight kills from Rogers and seven from Jessica Seehorn. Ariana Buchanan had four service aces and 19 digs, while Jaclyn Stuart and Hannah Stewart had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.

The Lady Scots looked very good early on with a 25-19 first set win. Covenant recorded 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .310 in the game. Piedmont answered with a 25-19 win of its own in the second set before holding off the Lady Scots for a 26-24 third set win.

Piedmont was led by Mallory Leary's 16 kills. Emily Peters registered 50 assists, while Haley Hixon led all players with 34 digs.
