Volleyball Sweeps Third Straight Quad-Match

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team used a rally in Saturday's first match to defeat Averett then swept Ferrum to complete a 2-0 in a USA South quad-match inside Barnes Physical Education Center.

Covenant took the first match over Averett in five sets by scores of 23-25, 27-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-10. The Lady Scots then held off Ferrum in three sets 25-9, 25-20, 25-21 in the day's finale.

The wins move the Lady Scots to 9-9 overall and 7-1 inside the USA South. Covenant currently sits in a tie for first in the South Division with Maryville.

MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Averett 2

Covenant trailed in the match 2-1 before rallying for an extra-point win set four and then a fifth set victory to complete the comeback.

Ginny Moore tallied 28 kills and 27 digs in the victory, while Schuyler Moore had 41 assists, 22 digs, eight kills and four block assists. Jessica Seehorn chipped in seven kills, while Ariana Buchanan and Jaclyn Stuart had 15 and 12 digs, respectively.

Each of the first four sets was decided by the minimum two points as multiple ties and lead changes took place throughout. All told, the match featured 35 ties and 15 lead changes.

The tide turned for Covenant late in the fourth set as the Lady Scots rebounded from a 23-21 deficit to take five of the final six points. Ginny Moore had two kills during the stretch, while Schuyler Moore had one and Chelsea VanDyk contributed a service ace to tie the match at 2-2.

Averett grabbed a 4-2 lead early in the deciding game, but Covenant scored five straight, capped by a combined block from Schuyler Moore and Morgan Opgenorth, to take a 7-4 edge. The Lady Scots extended the lead to 13-7 after a Seehorn kill and earned the match victory on another Seehorn later on.

Averett (16-9, 8-2 USA South) was led by Hannah Shields' 26 kills and 19 digs. Christiana Summa led all players with 29 digs and Keenan Marks had 43 assists in the loss.

MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Ferrum 0

In the day's second match, Covenant cruised to a first set win before holding off Ferrum over the last two sets to earn the sweep.

Opgenorth and Ginny Moore each had 10 kills, with Moore also recording 14 digs. Schuyler Moore had 28 assists and 12 digs and Buchanan registered 12 digs of her own.

Covenant routed the visiting Panthers in the first set behind 10 kills as a team coupled with Ferrum's seven attack errors. The second set was tighter as it saw four ties, but Covenant broke free from a 10-10 tie with nine of the next 10 points, highlighted by a Ginny Moore ace, to go ahead 19-11 and the Lady Scots would hang on from there.

The thrid set saw seven ties and three lead changes, but again Covenant showed its ability to pull away as the Lady Scots scored five of the final six points to break a 20-20 tie and take the match.

Hannah Helbert led Ferrum (11-9, 5-5 USA South) with nine kills and 11 digs. Sarah Hendrix added 26 digs and Cheyenne Strickland had a team-best 26 assists.

Covenant will face USA South rival Maryville on Tuesday at 7 p.m. inside Barnes PE Center.
